Spring has sprung, the Texas bluebonnets are in bloom and the birds are on wing. All this means that the hot Texas summer must be just around the corner. Texans are a hearty folk for handling the heat outdoors, but that certainly doesn’t mean they want to handle heat indoors. And the rooms in a central or south Texas home can take a beating from the sun. For this reason, Southern Shutters & Blinds in Georgetown, TX, offers a number of beautiful and energy efficient window treatment options to keep your home cool and comfortable and your air conditioning costs down.
Southern Shutters & Blinds carries three types of quality Hunter Douglas products that will not only be the perfect finishing touch for your room, but will also provide the energy efficiency you need.
Hunter Douglas’ Duette shades have a patented cellular construction that traps air in honeycomb pockets to help keep your house cooler in the summer months. This means that less heated air penetrates through and less cool air escapes. And while the honeycomb design makes Duette extremely energy efficient, the simplicity of shape and overall design make this shade beautiful, as well.
You can change the look of a room and eliminate the sun’s glare with Silhouette window shades. Silhouette shading features the signature S-vane design that seems to float between two sheers. To soften the look of harsh sunlight, simply tilt the vanes to your desired level of light and privacy. And because Sihouette shades block 88 percent of UV rays when opened and 99 percent of UV rays when closed, you can enjoy a sunlit room without concern for sun exposure to you or your furniture.
Roller Screens and Shades
Hunter Douglas Roller Screens and Shades from Southern Shutters & Blinds are a contemporary solution to an age-old problem. Our collection of roller shades provide simplicity of design in light control fabrics that range from sheer to opaque. Hunter Douglas’ Designer Screen Shades have light-defusing factors of 0 to 15 percent, thus offering UV protection while allowing an obstructed view through the shades.

Blinds are hard window coverings, made of individual slats or vanes, which tumble down or across the blind. The slats are controlled by a manual pull cord. They may be closed tightly for privacy, or adjusted to allow you to control the amount of light needed. Blinds can come in a variety of forms including wood, faux wood, woven wood, mini-blinds, and vertical blinds. They are usually made from wood, metal, a composite or woven grass, or bamboo. Most windows should be covered by horizontal blinds. Vertical blinds are best used to cover extremely large windows and patio doors. Blinds are best suited for rooms with strong architectural features like high ceilings, columns, and beams.
Shades are soft window coverings made from a continuous roll of material. They stack neatly at the top of the window. Shades are typically drawn up and down by cords or rolled up with a spring device. Unlike blinds, the fabric and feeling of a shade is flexible and flowing. Although shades can’t be adjusted for lighting, they do come in a range of opacity to accommodate light preferences. Popular varieties include Roman shades, roller shades, and cellular shades. Shades are best suited for layered and intimate spaces. If you prefer either a minimum or maximum amount of light, you can choose between sheer shades and blackout shades.
- Cellular shades are most popular because they are made of tiny pockets that trap hot and cold air creating an energy efficient source for your home.
- Roller shades are the standard economical shades that simply roll up and down.
- Roman shades are made of more elaborate and elegant fabrics which create soft horizontal folds down the window as they are lowered. Roman Shades are a decorative alternative to traditional drapery.
